2019 – Day 1 Game Summaries

JUNIOR GIRLS

First Round, Game 1
York House 52 – 22 Van Tech

Van Tech was no match for a strong Tigers lineup. YHS started slow but jumped up to a 30-6 lead at the half behind 15 pts from Nadine Wu. Van Tech came out playing hard in the third and won the quarter 11-8. York picked things up in the 4th, led by 8pts from Finley Butler in the quarter.

First Round, Game 2
Magee 28 – 19 John Oliver

Magee jumped out to an early 14-2 lead until JO’s full court pressure started to disrupt the play and a few of their shooters found the range. Halftime score was 16-12 and at the end of the game it was 28-19 for Magee. High scorer for Magee was Keilani Hawley with 14 points. JO scoring was led by Alyssa Villa with 7.

First Round, Game 3
Eric Hamber 37 – 24 Lord Byng

The game started slow as both teams struggle to finish. Byng was missing some players and had a short bench while Hamber freely subbed and kept pressure on Byng and built a 20-6 half time lead. Hamber kept it going in the 3rd building the lead up to 30-9. Byng battled hard and never gave up fighting back with 11 pts in the 4th quarter.  Game ended 37-24.

First Round, Game 4
St. Patrick’s 70 – 37 Point Grey

From the beginning St Patrick’s used their aggressive defence to pressure Point Grey into multiple turnovers and tough shots while capitalizing with their speed and ball movement on offence. Led by Rochelle Canlas (#3) the Celtics proved to be a tournament favourite. Point Grey was able to survive the initial onslaught and fought back to cut the lead to 13 at half but couldn’t complete the comeback. Ella Hyland and Emma Smith contributed for Point Grey with 4pts and 19pts respectively.

SENIOR GIRLS

First Round, Game 1
Notre Dame 76 – 31 Churchill

It was a tale of two distinct halves! A half time 34-30 Notre Dame lead grew to 52-36 after three quarters.  They outscored Churchill 42-21 in the second half.  Both teams pressed and forced turnovers but did not convert into points until the Jugglers began to hit!

Lord Byng 77 – 56 St. Patrick’s

A defensive game from the start with both teams forcing multiple turnovers with their full court press. Lord Byngs length on defence capitalized on turnovers and  and pull away thanks to solid shooting from both Sierra Jaggs (#16) and Engy Meseha (#2). St Pats were lead by Karysma Reyes (#7) and Veronica Dvorak (#15).

First Round, Game 3
Britannia 79 – 57 Killarney

It was a slow start to the game as both teams struggle to find their flow.  Britannia’s full court press was the game changer creating 27 turnovers from Killarney.  The Cougars were led by star player Janel Tantengco who scored 22 pts and was perfect from the FT stripe.  Kately Lafleur had 11 pts and Angelica Guantero contributed 10 pts on some flashly drives to the hoop.  However, Killarney was outrebounded 62-36 by the smaller Bruins line up who had 30 offensives rebounds.  Three Britannia starters had double doubles in tonight’s win: Surprise Munie with 23 pts and 18 rebounds, Jasleen Bahia with 18 pts and 11 rebounds & Shemaiah Abatayo with 14 pts and 10 rebounds.

John Oliver 69 – 38 York House

Both teams came out playing with great tenacity and the first quarter was evenly matched.  John Oliver was able to pull away in the second quarter and maintain their lead for the rest of the game with their superior three point shooting.
