2016 – Day 3 Game Summaries

JUNIOR GIRLS

7th/8th, Game 9
St. Patrick’s 49 – 38 Crofton House

It was a battle right from the start of tip-off as both teams were neck to neck for three quarters of the game.  In a preview of their league game this upcoming Tuesday, St. Pat’s offense came from a number of gorgeous back door cuts while Crofton House scored mostly in transition off steals.  With a few key defensive stops to start the fourth quarter, the Celtics went on a 12 points run and never looked back.  The Falcons made a valiant effort to rally back with their short bench but just ran out of time.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME
#5 Carissa Sy (Crofton House)
#6 Trisha Bernandez (St. Patrick’s)

5th/6th, Game 10
York House 28 – 21 Churchill

Perhaps it was the early morning start time as both teams displayed poor shooting performances from start to end.  Both York House and Churchill shot well below 20% field goal percentage from the floor and had a combined 24% from the free throw line (8 for 33 FTs).  The score was 12-12 at the end of first while the 3rd quarter only saw 3 points from the Tigers and 2 points from the Bulldogs.  Led by guards Kyra Lee and Justine Lau, the Tigers managed to pull away slowly to win 28-21 at the end of 32 minutes.  Top scorer was Kyra Lee with 10 points.

3rd/4th, Game 11
Notre Dame 38 – 30 Charles Tupper

An extremely close game throughout all four quarters. Both teams played with grit and determination on the last day of the tournament and battled basket to basket all along the way. In the fourth, the Notre Dame Jugglers were able to get more of a lead, but the Tupper Tigers did not let up one second. Leading scorers Mandy Sam (16pts) from Notre Dame and Ann Borromeo (14pts) from Tupper played key roles in keeping a close and exciting game.

1st/2nd, Game 12
Lord Byng 47 – 27 Killarney

Big championship win over Killarney for Lord Byng’s juniors. Killarney’s 2-3 zone proved to be no match for Lord Byng as they penetrated with ease. Byng’s posts showed their poise with their grade 9 stand out Yvona Acimovic having a game high of 16 points. Player of the game for Lord Byng Skyler MacDonald showed her leadership ability and from Killarney number 39 Janice Tan contributed with an excellent work ethic for her team. Both teams had a fantastic tournament and it was a great final for the spectators.

SENIOR GIRLS

7th/8th, Game 9
Crofton House 52 – 41 John Oliver

This was a hard fought game by both sides with many players showing their drive by diving to the floor for loose balls.  The game was head to head up to the beginning of the second quarter, as Crofton House went on a run to go up by ten at the end of the first half.  Crofton’s momentum was kept up through the beginning of the third and pushed their lead to 16, but the Jokers made a late push to come within 7 at the 7 minute mark of the fourth.

Players of the game were Laura Yang (Crofton) who drove and rebounded harder than any player on the court and Janna Jamorabon (John Oliver) who hit two key three pointers to get the Jokers within a single digit margin in the fourth quarter.

5th/6th, Game 10
Notre Dame 61 – 51 St. Patrick’s

The Jugglers & Celtics were an even match up as the teams went back and forth for most of the game. St. Pat’s was led by Cassandra Brinn’s explosive speed and 18 points. The 4th quarter saw a surge from Notre Dame with a 14 point lead. The leadership of grade 12 Trisha Francia (ND) proved to be too much as she hit three back-to-back 3’s after being accidentally poked in the eye. She finished with a game high of 29 points.

3rd/4th, Game 11
Kitsilano 63 – 58 York House

Another exciting and close battle for 3rd place between the Kitsilano Blue Demons and York House Tigers. Kitsilano capitalized on their post game and York House countered with their quick guards. A huge shot by York House’s, Brianna Tsui, tied the game 51-51 with 1.6 seconds left and brought the game into overtime. In overtime, unfortunately for the York House Tigers, Kitsilano was able to finish their transition layups and their leading scorer, Joy Lin (17pts), had fouled out. Leading scorer for Kitsilano was Maya Soper with 26 pts.

1st/2nd, Game 12
Churchill 66 – 57 Britannia

Churchill started off the game strong using their speed and pressure defense to their advantage, giving them a 41-23 lead by half. But in the third, the Bruins started drawing fouls from the Bulldogs, capitalizing on their foul shooting, allowing them to close the gap. By the fourth, it was a tight game with the Bulldogs barely holding their lead and Britannia using their size to their advantage. In the end, Churchill was able to hit some key outside shots, giving them the 66-57 win.  Top scorers were Julian Duong (Brit) with 26 points and Cecilia Bao (Churchill) with 18 points.
