The 5th/6th place game of the VGBA tournament was controlled by Kitsilano from the get go.  The Blue Demons jumped to a 16-2 run in the first quarter and kept their lead from there.  Despite many injuries and a hard fought battle, Killarney had a hard time finishing from the inside.  Kitsilano was led by the game high scorer Sophie Burgoyne with 22 points while Julie Panganiban and Tianne Herbert chipped in 8 points each for the Cougars.

Third Round, Game 12
York House  77      Notre Dame  55

York House jumped to a quick start scoring the first 11 points and never looked back.  The half ended with 46-23.  Their deep bench proved to be too much for Notre Dame who only had two players in double digits scoring compared to all five of the Tigers starters.  Give credit to the Jugglers who never once quit throughout the game, led by all-star selection Lauren Bondi who ended the night with a game high 34 points.

JUNIOR GIRLS

Third Round, Game 9
Eric Hamber  48     Gladstone  50

Perhaps the early morning game time attributed to the slow start and turnovers by both teams.  Both Hamber and Gladstone pulled out a full court press to gain momentum at various points in the game.  The Gladiators lead 32-22 at half time.  In a game filled with five scoring runs from both squads, Gladstone opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run and another 7-0 run at the start of the fourth.  At one point, the Gladiators saw their 19 point lead dwindle down to the final buzzer as the Griffins charged back with an impressive 17-0 point streak to close out the game.

Third Round, Game 10
St. Patrick’s  50      Britannia  51

Britannia jumped out with an early lead finishing 12-5 after 8 minutes of play.  St. Pat’s put on a full court press that allowed the Celtics to pull within 4 points at the end of first half 28-24.  The Bruins led the entire game until the final 30 seconds when Chelsie del Rosario of the Celtics sank one of two free throws to put St. Pat’s up 50-49.  Jennifer Hoang made a crucial defensive play in the Bruins’ back court that also led to her scoring the final basket in transition, allowing Britannia to pull an upset win by 1.

Low scoring first half as both teams played tenacious defense.  Score was tied 11-11 at the half.  The game opened up in the second half as both teams traded baskets.  However, Notre Dame’s tough 1-3-1 half court trap was too much for Crofton.  Final score 42-29.
